The Port of Panama City requested soil samples be obtained along the south and west bulkheads of St. Andrews Bay to perform the required laboratory/analytical testing for dredging. Based upon bathametric surveys, the elevations within the proposed dredge area ranged from approximately -28 to -38 feet and the bottom of St. Andrews Bay will be dredged to an elevation of approximately -40 feet. SESI performed eighteen (18) vibracores ranging in depth from approximately 3 to 12 feet below the mudline. Additionally, two (2) barge standard penetration borings were completed to depths of 80 feet below the mudline. These borings were performed for two mooring dolphins which will be constructed along the east dock. The dolphins will be supported by seven (7) piles having a batter of 5:1.
NASA KENNEDY SPACE CENTER - Crawlerway
Kennedy Space Center, FL
Southern Earth Sciences, Inc. conducted studies to evaluate the soil conditions along the Crawlerways at NASA's Kennedy Space Center to determine if modifications are necessary to support the next
generation of space vehicles which are estimated to be 33% heavier (total weight) than any previous load.
SESI mobilized to perform 160 CPT tests and completed testing nine days later, several days ahead of the fast-track schedule. There was an urgency for the testing to be accurate and timely to avoid delays to launches scheduled by NASA.
Precautions were in place to allow for testing to be placed on hold should the Crawlerways be needed during an emergency. SESI was able to complete the testing ahead of schedule and avoid any negative effects to NASA operations.
SEABROOK SECTOR GATE COMPLEX - North End of IHNC
New Orleans, LA
Southern Earth Sciences, Inc. is providing soil investigation services and laboratory testing for the Seabrook Sector Gate project located in Orleans Parish, Louisiana. The program is part of the
Improving Hurricane Protection for the Inner Harbor Navigational Canal Hurricane Protection Project.
Work includes thirteen (13) soil borings with the majority performed by jack-up barge over water to an elevation of -140 feet. In addition, nineteen (19) Cone Penetration Tests (CPT) to a maximum depth of 140 feet are planned.
The laboratory investigation consists of unconfined compression, unconsolidated undrained triaxial tests, consolidated undrained triaxial tests, direct shear tests, miniature wave shear, consolidation, particle size analysis, liquid limit and organic contents.
FISH RIVER BRIDGE - Over Water CPT Project
Magnolia Springs, AL
Southern Earth Sciences, Inc. conducted thirty-seven (37) Cone Penetration Tests (CPT) to depths of 100 feet in marsh or over-the-water conditions.
Four (4) Standard Penetration Test borings
were also performed and laboratory analysis consisting of classification tests, shear strength and consolidation were completed.
The structure was supported on 14" to 24" precast concrete piles to depths of about 80 feet. Static load test as well as PDA were utlized to confirm pile design.
HERO TO OAKVILLE - Hurricane Protection Project
Plaquemines Parish, LA
Southern Earth Sciences performed eleven (11) soil test borings to depths of 150 feet on land and marsh, and eight (8) Cone Penetration Tests (CPT) to depths up to 150 feet.
Laboratory testing consisted of unconfined compression, unconsolidated undrained triaxial tests, consolidations, particle size analyses, liquid limits, organic content and specific gravity.
WBV-73 WESTERN TIE-IN HIGHWAY CROSSING - Lake Cataouatche Area
Jefferson Parish, LA
Southern Earth Sciences, Inc. served as a Geotechnical Investigation and Construction Materials Testing subcontractor for the WBV-73 Western Tie-In Highway Crossing project
in Jefferson Parish and St. Charles Parish, Louisiana.
SESI conducted one 5-inch undisturbed boring and 25 Cone Penetration Test (CPT) soundings to depths up to 150 feet using track-mounted and marsh buggy equipment.
NEW ORLEANS LEVEE WORK - Levee Protection
New Orleans, LA
Southern Earth Sciences performed Phase I and II Field Investigation and Lab Testing services for the New Orleans District, USACE IDIQ Contract No. W912P8-07-D-0021. The project is located within Plaquemines
Parish covering from New Orleans to Venice, Louisiana.
Services performed by SESI included drilling, cone penetration testing and laboratory testing. The total drilling footage for Phase I of the project was 1,706 ft. and Phase II was an additional 2,290 ft. The total footage for Cone Penetration Testing was 4,090 ft.
In addition, approximately
1,200 triaxial tests, 2,000 atterberg limits, 70 consolidations and 3,000 moisture content tests were completed by SESI.
