THYSSEN KRUPP STEEL MILL - New Plant Facility

Calvert, AL

Southern Earth Sciences, Inc. (SESI) has worked on mutliple subcontracts for the construction of Thyssen Krupp Steel Mill's new site located in Calvert, Ala.

SESI provided services for the initial site rough grading contract which included the clearing and grubbing of approximately 1,400 acres, stripping approximately 2,300,000 cy of top soil, and placing the stripped top soil in berms to create a line of sight and sound barriers, undercutting approximately 450,000 cy of undesirable materials, and 4,000,000 cy of compacted fill.

SESI has also provided pile installation monitoring services for over 75,000 Augercast and Dewaal Piles, and concrete testing services for this 4.6 billion dollar project.

JAMES AUDUBON BRIDGE - Mississippi River Bridge

Point Coupee Parish & West Feliciana Parish, LA

Southern Earth Sciences, Inc. has served as a subcontractor providing quality control testing on concrete, soil, cement and asphalt for the construction of a 4-lane bridge connecting Point Coupee Parish with West Feliciana Parish, La. Covering over 15 miles.

The construction includes two approach roads, one on each side of the west and east bank and is over $200M total project cost.

SESI's role consists of laboratory testing which included soils investigations for classification purposes, proctors, ph and other mechanical procedures; testing of aggregates for gradation, abrasion and soundness; and testing of concrete for compression. Field work has included concrete testing for slump, air, temperature and consistency. Field tests have also been conducted on soil for compaction, soil cement pulverization and spread, and aggregate base for compaction.

HARVEY CANAL - Flood Wall Project

Harvey, LA

Southern Earth Sciences, Inc. served as a subcontractor providing QA/QC on this massive Louisiana flood-protection and sector-gate project including over 30,000 yards of concrete.

SESI provided inspection services for structural steel and welding, and concrete testing and inspection.

MISSISSIPPI LIME - Limestone Grinding Facility

Mobile, AL

Southern Earth Sciences, Inc. performed subsurface investigation, geotechnical engineering, environmental analysis, and construction materials testing for a new limestone grinding facility for Mississippi Lime.

Three different sites were investigated for the facility. The chosen site required the placement of over fifteen feet of fill material over highly compressible marshland, requiring the use of prefabricated vertical drains (wick drains) to speed up the consolidation. Auger cast piles were used to support the major pieces of equipment, while smaller loads were placed on shallow foundations.

BREAKFAST POINT K-8 SCHOOL - New School Construction

Mobile, AL

Southern Earth Sciences, Inc. conducted geotechnical investigations and performed construction materials testing services for this $28.7 million dollar, 126,000 square foot state-of-the-art school.

PHOENIX WEST II - Condominiums

Gulf Shores, AL

Southern Earth Sciences served as a subcontractor for providing construction materials testing for this 30-story condominium in Orange Beach, Alabama. The structure is supported on 2,500 18-inch square by 75-feet long precast piles.

Cone Penetration Testing (CPT), Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) and SE/IR technologies were utilized for foundation design and QA/QC.
